Panigiri

Composed, arranged, mixed and partly filmed by Anastasis Sarakatsanos, in Summer 2010 as a final project for the course "Composing for Film and Media" at the University of Sussex.
In this project, 18 musicians were asked to improvise on a given tetrachord and a rhythmic pattern. Each musician was filmed individually on a different location for 12 minutes. Film and Sound were then edited as one in order to form the composition.

The compositional outcome is the result of editing and mixing the parts of each instrument filmed in different locations (using both 'classical' and 'world' instruments, representing different music cultures, filmed in urban and rural spaces in Greece and the UK).
It is an ambitious project, aiming to create an audiovisual experience that will overcome the geographic, spiritual, economic, political and temporal boundaries of musical collaboration and will relate the viewer/listener to the controlled randomness of the creation process.

The role of music in film is, mostly -- even in cases of 'experimental' use -- complimentary and one-dimensional, highlighting certain elements of film. What I wish to further explore is the merging of music and film in one analogous and interdependent new medium, rather than the role of one medium serving the other.

Pigeon Impossible

by Lucas Martell

The film took nearly 5 years to complete and is the first attempt at animation by writer/director Lucas Martell: "When the project started, it was mostly an excuse to learn 3D animation, but by the end of the project I had spent so much time reworking and polishing the story that I just wanted people to laugh."
The end-result is a hilarious 6-minute romp through the streets of Washington D.C. as our hero fights to save himself, and the world from the chaos reigned down by a hungry pigeon. Breathtaking visuals and a sweeping soundtrack showcase the work of nearly one-hundred talented artists and musicians, and the film stands as a testament to what can be accomplished by a team of dedicated volunteers working for the love of their craft.
